Daniel Negreanu (born July 26, 1974 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a professional poker player.
As a teenager he was an aspiring pool player but then transitioned to poker. He dropped out of high school and became a rounder, looking for illegal games around Toronto. When he was 21, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Growing up, Daniel played in many local charity casinos. His first start was at Casino Country in Toronto.
In his first World Series of Poker appearance in 1998, he won a bracelet in Pot Limit Texas hold 'em tournament making him, at that time, the youngest WSOP event champion in history at the of age 23. This victory and his explosion onto the poker scene earned him the nickname "Kid Poker". The following year he won the United States Poker Championship and in 2001, he finished 11th in the Main Event of the WSOP.
In 2004, Negreanu had his best year at the WSOP, winning one bracelet and finishing in the money in five other events, earning him ESPN's Toyota Player of the Year award. Most recently, in fall 2004, he won the Borgata Poker Open, part of the World Poker Tour, earning him over $1.1 million, and the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, worth $1.8 million. Negreanu's success in 2004 won him the CardPlayer Magazine Player of the Year award. He is currently the second all-time leading money winner on the World Poker Tour circuit, trailing only Tuan Le. Since 1997, Negreanu has had more tournament wins than anyone in poker. As of 2005, he has three WSOP bracelets, and two World Poker Tour titles.
Negreanu also had an appearance on the original TV poker series Late Night Poker (series 5, heat 5) but he did not fare well against the opposition.
In addition to his poker playing, Negreanu has written over 100 columns for CardPlayer Magazine. He is a contributor for the updated version of Doyle Brunson's "bible" of poker Super/System II. He tutors people online as part of Poker School Online and even high profile clients such as actor Tobey Maguire, who has had some recent success in poker tournaments.
Negreanu is known for his ability to "read" other players. This means that he can gather information about his opponent's hand by studying his opponent's betting patterns and physical expressions. But it is difficult to assess how well he, or any other player, is able to do this.
Negreanu is easy to spot in a tournament, almost always wearing a hockey jersey and listening to music on headphones which he says relaxes him so that he can win.
Negreanu signed a deal where he would play cash poker games exclusively at the Wynn Las Vegas resort, and was their "Poker Ambassador," where he would reportedly take on anyone for any amount of money in the Wynn poker room. However, Negreanu and the Wynn amicably parted ways in October 2005, because the deal was hampering Negreanu's ability to play in top cash games outside the Wynn.
Negreanu pronounces his surname "Ne-grah-new" but has said he is not bothered about how others choose to pronounce it.
Negreanu currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. He married Lori Lin Weber on August 19, 2005.
He plays under the alias 'KidPoker' on FullContactPoker.com, an Ongame client on the same network as HollywoodPoker.com and PokerRoom.com.
