Title: Hutchison System for Texas Holdem

When playing Texas Hold'em Poker a lot of beginner players have a problem when they have to choose a card to come into play with and which card use to raise or check the raise with. Some play too tight, however most pay a high price for playing too loose. Edward Hutchison`s system can be very helpful in this case In this system you credit each hand with a particular number of points and you make a decision based on that (it is similar to counting PC points when playing bridge). A lot of experienced players may question the efficiency and stiffness of such an attitude, but it is a good starting point for the beginners.

System should be used in a limit game only. The way of its use is shown below:

step 1 - add the value of the cards you have in your hand. Ace 16 points King - 14, Queen - 13, Jack - 12, Ten - 11. The rest of the cards get the points accordingly to their value: Nine - 9 points, Seven - 7 points etc.

step 2 - if the cards make a pair, add ten points.

step 3 - if the cards are of the same color, add four points.

step 4 - if your cards are connectors (the difference in worth is 1 - i.e. an eight and a seven), add three points.

step 5 - if your cards are one gap (the difference in worth is 2 - i.e. an eight and a six) add two points.

step 6 - if your cards are two gap (the difference in worth is3 - i.e. an eight and a five) add one point.

All the cards which got 30 (or more) points are so called premium hands and you can play them from any position as long as there was no raise beforehand. If you are in the middle position, come into play when you have in cards at least 27 points. If you are in the late position, 25 points is enough.

If someone raised before you or if you want to do it yourself, depending on the position, you must have: 34 points for an early position, 31 points for a middle position and 29 points for a late position.

Monte Carlo simulations

Monte Carlo simulations showed that a card that got at least 30 points won 17% deals in which 10 players came into play altogether. It may seem not much; any random card will win 10% deals; however, premium hands win 70% deals more than other cards. It is enough for you to have predominance over the players that play loose and you do not have to waste any money on playing with cards worth very little.
