Title: Hutchison System for Omaha (High and High/Low)

I described Hutchison System for Texas Holdem
in this article. Now, it is time for Omaha High and High/Low. In these
types of poker every player gets a hand consisting of four cards. It makes the
number of possible card combinations very high. What is more, it is not easy to
pigeon-hole every single hand, like it can be done in Texas. That`s when
Hutchison System comes-in-handy, it is very useful, simple and efficient.
Omaha High
The points in Omaha High are counted accordingly to the below chart:

The table consists of three sections which give our hand a particular number of
points depending on its ability of making flushes, threes of a kind, full houses
and straights.
Section 1- flush- it is easy; when you have Ah xh
in your hand, you get 8 points, you get 2 points for 8c xc. If you have both of
these sets at the same time, you get 10 points. You hale to take into
consideration the fact that in Omaha you can only use two cards from your hand.
That`s why, not only is the third card in a particular color useless but it is
harmful too.
It decreases your chances of getting flush, so we
take away 2 points for the third card of the same color.
Section2-pairs- it estimates our hand`s chances of making three of a kind or a
full house. A pair of Kings gives you 16 points, a pair of nines 10 points, and
when you have K K 9 9 – you get 26 points. Sets are very important (three the
same cards)- they do look lovely but they are completely useless. So with A A A
K hand you can call no bid without hesitation (you can only use two Aces; the
fact that you have the third Ace makes it less likely for another Ace to show up
on the table.
Section 3- straight- 9 8 gives you 8 points; 5 4 3
gives you 18 points and Q J T 9 gives you 25 points. A K Q is a specific set- it
gives you the possibility of making straight from one side only, thus we have to
take away 4 points for Ace sets. It is different when, apart from an Ace, you
have a card( cards) that give you the possibility of making “wheel”- straight A
2 3 4 5. In this case you get 6 points for such a card and 12 points for two
cards like that. For example: A 3- that is 6 points and A 2 4 – that is 12
points. Additionally, we have to take away 2 points for every gap between the
cards in your hand. So, if your Q J T 9 hand gives 25 points, you get only 17
points for K J 9 6 ( we take away two points for the K-J gap, two points for J-9
and four points for a double 9-6 gap)
When you add up the points from each section,
their use is very easy: 28 points is enough to call in the game. When you
have 32 points, you can even raise before flop.
Statistics research showed that, a card with x points wins x/2% deal in the
game at a ten-seat table. Thus a hand we can call in the game with (28 points)
wins 14% deals, and a hand we raise with (32 points) wins 16%. It seems to be
very little. But you need to bear in mind that a random hand wins 10% deals,
thus a 30-point-hand wins 50% deals more.
Examples:

The strongest possible card in Omaha high- 2x the highest flush- that is 16
points, a pair of Aces-18 points, a pair of Kings 16 points and A K combination
for straight- 8 points- but we have to take away 4 points because of an Ace:
Altogether 54 points- raise.

A completely useless card, it is an instant “no
bid” ( a Queen of hearts and Q T set on straight- that is only 11 points)

8 points for hearts, 14 points for a pair of Queens and 12 points for A Q J on
straight (18 points for a three card set- 2 points for A-Q gap and 4 points for
an Ace). Altogether: 34 points- a strong card- raise.

8 points for clubs on an Ace are decreased by 2
points for three cards of the same color. A pair of Kings- 16 points. An Ace and
a two- that is – two cards on wheel- 6 points. An Ace and a King- 8 points for
two cards on straight- 4 for an Ace. Altogether: 32 points- not too bad- raise.

A beautiful „rainbow”- no possibilities of picking
up color and 0 points for the first section. No pair- that is zero points in
pairs section, and A 3 4 set gives you only 12 points. A very weak card- fold.

Both colors give your hand 3 points each. No pair- zero points. Four cards on
straight- 25 points and you have to take away 2 points for the 9-7 gap and 4
points for 7-4 gap. Altogether: 25 points. It is not enough to call in the game
unless you are on a small or big blind.
Omaha High/Low
The most wanted hand in every high-low game is the one that can win both high
and low. Unfortunately, such cards do not show up very often. That is why the
first step in Hutchison system for Omaha High-Low is hands identification, which
hand is good enough to play high game only and is the favorite in high game at
the same time. Those requirements are met by a hand when:
- every card is at least a Ten,
- there are two pairs or,
- a pair and two cards of one color or
- 2x two cards of the same color.
For example:
or
or

When you hale a type high hand, you simply call in the game. If you have a
different card, you give it points in four stages.
In stage one, you check the usefulness of your
hand for a low game. In order to do that, you give points to two lowest cards:
A-3 -- 17 points A-4 -- 13 points A-5 -- 10
points2-3 -- 15 points2-4 -- 12 points3-4 -- 11 points4-5 -- 8 points
Next, you give points to your kickers on condition
that they are not doubled with the cards used in the second stage. If you have a
pair of kickers, i.e. a pair of threes, you give the points for only one of
them!
5 -- 4 points K,Q,J -- 2 points6,T -- 1 point
stage three, points for pairs. If you have a three
of a Kind instead of a pair, divide the points by 2!:
A,A -- 8 points
K,K -- 6 points
Q,Q -- 5 points
J,J -- 2 points
T,T -- 1 point
4,4 -- 1 point
3,3 -- 1 point
2,2 -- 3 points
Stage four, two cards of the same color (if you
have three cards in a particular color, divide the points by two. But, if all
the cards are of the same color, do not add any points in this stage!):
Axs -- 4 points
Kxs -- 3 points
Qxs -- 2 points
Jxs -- 2 points
Txs -- 1
point
9xs -- 1 point
8xs -- 1 point
After summing up all the points from 4 stages, you
will get the result from 0 to 45. You need 20 points to call in the game and 30
points to raise.
In case of Omaha High-Low, there is no direct dependence between the numbers of
points that a particular hand gets and the number of won games by that hand.
However, during a longer period of time a 25 point hand wins more games than a
24 point hand. A 24 point hand wins more games than a 23 point hand and so on.
Examples:

This card qualifies as high, you call in.

This card qualifies as high, you call in.

This card qualifies as high, you call in.

This card does not qualify as high and in the next four stages it gets only 6
points. No bid.

The first stage gives you 17 points for A 3. In the second stage you get 6 for
kickers like a five or a King. The third stage, you do not have a pair so you
get zero points. In the fourth stage, you get 4 points for two cards of the same
color that starts from an Ace. Altogether, 27 points a nice hand call!

Inconspicuous looking card? That is the strongest
card in Omaha High/Low. Its total result equals 45 points- 20 for A-2, 9 for a
kicker like a Three, 8 for a pair of Aces and 2x4 points for cards in the same
color, starting from an Ace.
