World Series of Poker - Johnny Moss World Series of Poker is like some kind of poker world championship. It is an event which makes you famous and you can win enormous sums of money. It rouses the imagination of the players all over the world. WOSP television broadcasting made that event even more popular and the interest of poker grew bigger. Click "read more" to get some more information.

In 1970 Benny Binion, the owner of the legendary Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, came up with an idea to organize an amazing tournament. The best USA players were supposed to play against each other in front of the audience, the tournament was to appoint the best of the best. Benny named that event World Series of Poker. That is how the most famous world poker event was born.

35 players took part in the event`s first edition. There were tournaments in five different types of poker. Interestingly enough it was not the number of counters which decided who was the winner, but the players` voting. Johnny Moss became the first triumphant of the WSOP.

The rules were changed in the next edition- the game lasted till there was one player left at the table. Moss won again. In 1972 there eight players and the fee was set for $10.000 and it is the same now. The rule was that the winner takes everything, that made Amarillo Slim $80.000 richer.

WSOP was becoming more popular and gained more interest in the following years. For example, in the year 2000 Chris Ferguson beat 518 opponents and won an amazing amount of money $1.500.000. But it is nothing in comparison to last year. There were 2576 players at the start. Greg Raymer won $ 5.000.000!

Where does that incredible WSOP popularity come from? One of the factors is surely the fact that anyone can have a go in this tournament. You just have to book a room in Las Vegas, pay $ 10.000 fee and you can start playing. Obviously, not everybody can afford to spend so much money on the pleasure of "swimming with sharks in the pool". And here the world of online poker gives you a helping hand…

Any poker room offers some kind of so called WSOP satellite- qualifying online tournament with a reasonable fee. The prize is WSOP Package- a ticket to Las Vegas, a stay in a luxurious hotel and of course $ 10.000 fee. We do not want to omit the players with a very little sum of money to play, and some poker rooms offer satellites to satellites. So with a little bit of skills and luck you can take part in WSOP spending a few dollars only! These are not just empty words, Chris Moneymaker(that is a real name) is the living proof- the winner of WSOP 2003. He started from satellite on Poker Stars website, spent $39 on a fee and won $ 2.500.000 in WSOP. According to all probability 2005 edition will bring new records in both the number of players and the pool prize.

In 1970 and in 1971 the word Series was a little bit over the top because there was only one master cup. 5Card Stud competition was added in 1972. In the following years the World Series was growing bigger only to reach the number of 33 tournaments in2004, which are the part of it. Altogether, the pool prize in all the tournaments was about $50 million. Did anyone say that you can make the biggest money on boxing or tennis?

To avoid nomenclature misunderstandings the main event. I mentioned above, is called Championship Event or WSOP Main Event. If someone says " I am going to World Series of Poker this year" it means that s/he talks about Championship Event. Obviously, the contestants play the most popular type of poker, that is No-Limit Texas Hold`em, in the master cup.

Omitting the matter of names, all the tournaments included in the World Series have one thing in common - their winner receives a legendary golden bracelet- the most precious prize, apart from money, in the world of poker. There are three amazing players whose names cannot be missed- Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan - each of them has in their collection 9 pieces of that unusual jewelry!!

If you want to get some more information, go on to the official WSOP website as well as on ESPN which broadcasts these tournaments. Since 2002 WSOP has a serious competition- This is WPT World Poker Tour. From 09. 2004 to 03.2005 the first European Poker Tour season was played- Let`s hope that this event will stay for longer on the Old Continent. Coming soon , the next Championship Event - from 7 to 15 July 2005. See you in Vegas…;)
